“It does not make sense if the cause of the problem is not addressed first.” – Wimbert Hato, MP from the MAN coalition party. The government promised a solution early in the year, but has yet to comment if the 20 million guilder project includes infrastructure improvements.

Travel agency Corendon is building a mega-hotel next to the polluted Rif mangrove area. Corendon has nonetheless refused to help pay for the cleanup and rehabilitation of the area. The Curaçao government is the lone investor in the project, which Corendon guests will surely enjoy after completion. Is this a hint of what kind of social responsibility we can expect from the travel giant Corendon?

Water Polution in Curaçao

One of Curaçao’s biggest problems at the moment is our water treatment facilities. In 2018 UNOPS already recommended that the island invest in modernizing and building new water treatment facilities for the island. Currently there are 3 water treatment facilities, of which only one works properly. The remaining 70% of sewage water is dumped, untreated, into the ocean.

About 30 trucks dump raw sewage straight into the ocean on the northern coast.
