Apartheid takes a second life in Curaçao, where beaches are torn in half by towering walls to keep locals out.

Locals restricted beach access in Curaçao.

The privatization of beaches has been an issue since the 1980s, when larger hotels chains established themselves on Curaçao. In total there are 32 beaches on Curaçao according to the Curacao Tourist Board. However, private beaches account for over half all beaches in Curaçao. This often leads to locals choosing other free beaches, attributing to a so called ‘segregation’.
